Women's Basketball Coaching Staff
Head Coach: Dave Kavern (12th season)
Dave Kavern is entering his 12th year at Porterville College. In 2004-2005, the Lady Pirates won the school's first women’s basketball championship.
Prior to joining PC, Kavern was a physical education instructor and varsity basketball coach at Porterville High School. In his five seasons, the Panthers advanced to two Valley Division I championships.
Before Porterville High School, he was an assistant coach at Western Michigan University from 1984-1987, and again from 1990-1995 as the recruiting co-coordinator. The 199-1992 recruiting class was ranked in the top 40 in the nation according to Blue Star Index. The 1992-1993 team was voted "The Most Improved" Division I team in the country.
Kavern was also the head women’s basketball coach, head softball coach and full time physical education, health and recreation instructor at Southwestern Michigan College in Dowagiac, Michigan from 1987-1990. He was the first full-time head women’s basketball coach in the school's history. His records at SMC included 8-18, 15-12 and 19-9.
He was named the Michigan Community College Athletic Association Coach of the Year in 1989-1990. His softball teams had records of 25-24, 37-17, 26-24.
Kavern has sent several players on to various four-year colleges and universities during his career at PC.
He has been married for 29 years to Dianne Kavern, an adjunct instructor in the physical education department at PC. They have two children - girls, Hailey (18) and Marnie (16).
