National Days of Prayer have been observed in this country since the nation's beginning. The first Day of Prayer on record was actually observed prior to the nation's first birthday, in 1775. The national Day of Prayer was established by Congress in 1952 and signed by President Truman as an official annual observance. In 1988, the national Day of Prayer was set aside by the House, Senate, and President Reagan as the first Thursday of every May. This day of prayer is for everyone; persons of all faiths, ethnicities, and political affiliations can unite in prayer for our shared country, communities, families, and futures. |
